Dr. Aram Messerlian joined the Department of Anesthesiology at Olive View – UCLA Medical Center in October, 1998 and has worked here continuously since. During this time, Dr. Messerlian has served the hospital and Department of Health Services in many essential and vital capacities. He currently serves as Director of Obstetrical Anesthesia.
Born in Fresno, California, Dr. Messerlian attended UCLA where he received his BS in Biology. He earned is medical degree at the University of Southern California and completed his training in Anesthesiology at LAC/USC.
As a board-certified Anesthesiologist, Dr. Messerlian is an outstanding clinician who possesses unparalleled technical skills and astute clinical judgment. In addition to managing surgical cases, he is regularly asked to provide essential anesthesia services to other areas of the hospital including the ICU, ER, GI Lab, Cardiology/Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, and Neurology. With his many years of experience and his familiarity with both the staff and environment of these critical non-OR areas, Dr. Messerlian understands both the challenges and hazards of providing anesthesia care to patients in these areas.
Dr. Messerlian is an educator and was instrumental in establishing and ensuring the viability of an Anesthesiology specialty rotation with UCLA here at Olive View. He is one of a core group of instructors who regularly work with resident physicians helping them to hone their regional anesthetic skills.
Dr. Messerlian currently chairs the LA County DHS Anesthesia Best Practices Committee and formerly served as the chair of the Patient Safety Committee. He also serves on the Invasive Procedures Committee and Operative Services Committee and has served on the ICU and CPR Committees.
The Department of Anesthesiology at Olive View long ago realized the importance of data tracking. Since 2003 Dr. Messerlian has assumed the responsibility of collecting, aggregating, and presenting departmental peer review, performance improvement, productivity and credentialing data as well as OR utilization statistics. He is currently working on a project to move the OR to an electronic preoperative and intraoperative anesthesia record-keeping system.
